Born in Berkeley, California, Grant Haffner was raised in East Hampton, NY and remained a resident there for most of his life. His images are inspired by and reflect the country roads, flat landscapes and surrounding water that he takes in as he travels the area around him. His signature motif of utility poles with power lines creates an original sense of movement and depth to his distinctive compositions.
Haffner’s moody acrylic paintings reflect his adoration for the landscape. His compositions are rendered with a bold and sometimes neon color palette, which is cleverly balanced to depict the speed and rhythm of the rural roadways. The slightly tilted utility poles and power-lines are primary to these compositions as they are utilized to create the depth of field and perspective. Haffner is committed to exploring these horizons, which appear to extend as far as the eye can see, with no end or beginning.
Grant Haffner sees every passing mile of country road as a potential painting, often pulling over onto the shoulder to record the more striking scenes with his camera. The east end of Long Island became his muse, and he is ready to venture on to interpret new landscapes. He still dreams of one day driving his beat-up truck on a cross country adventure, documenting his journey through paintings.
Haffner currently lives and works in Western MA.
