Trained as an architect and designer, Oscar Bluemner turned to painting in the early 20th century, producing expressive, lush compositions influenced by Cubism and reflective of his keen interest in the visual, emotional, and psychological resonance of color. A prominent and influential figure in American Modernism, Bluemner had work included in the landmark 1913 Armory Show and was championed by Alfred Stieglitz. A master of both oil and watercolor, he painted bold, simplified urban and natural forms and scenes, with color itself always taking precedence.
